Change - Chairman Emeritus’ Corner 10/1/2009
By Gordon Carton, Chairman Emeritus Change (Condensed from a handbook by Price Pritchett, Ph.D.)
The one thing in life that is constant is change.
Your competitive market is continually changing - so must your company. Employees must participate; they, like most humans are usually opposed to change! This is the challenge to management.
One of the major tools of change is technology. Another is knowledge. This is the information age! Our response time must be quick - and decisive! Change must come through acceptance and cooperation.
Inertia is more crippling than mistakes! Communication must flow fast - and freely. Keep moving - learn from your mistakes. Employees must become more self-sufficient, putting themselves in charge of problem-solving.
Negative thinking must disappear! The surest security in today’s world comes from a willingness to take risk. ”Guts” give the best odds for success because a company’s future depends on its ability to find better ways to do business. Blaming and complaining (which are defensive stances) must disappear to be replaced by identifying problems and inputting solutions for fixing things!
We must become “kids” again. Before we matured and developed logic we had heart! We trusted our creative instincts - our intuition.
To participate we need to revert. We must be open to change.
Succinctly, we must change. We must create a culture that knows how to learn!
