Translations in Canada raise the Language Bar
Certification in national standard is a new benchmark for Canadian translation companies
May 27, 2009 (Toronto) – In a fragmented, unregulated industry like language services, competition is fierce and international in scope. Comparing apples to apples isn’t always easy when trying to evaluate translation services. Some countries are starting to implement industry standards for translation services and organizations are starting to use them as a benchmark for assessing language providers.
Canada recently joined these ranks with the release of the first-ever national standard for the language industry, CAN/CGSB-131.10-2008. This new translation standard establishes procedures that language providers for the Canadian government are expected to follow. Leaders in the industry agree that adopting this standard, similar to that endorsed in Europe, will provide Canadian language providers with a competitive edge in the world market.
Able Translations Ltd. is the first language provider to receive a certificate of conformity to Canada’s new national translation standard. The company was presented with its certificate at the 2nd annual Translation World Conference by Canada’s Language Industry Association (AILIA), the standard’s certification authority. Wilson Teixeira, President of Able Translations Ltd., declared, “We are proud and honoured to be the first company to achieve certification under Canada’s national standard for translation services. Able Translations Ltd. has always been committed to quality and continuous improvement. The successful completion of the CAN/CGSB-131.10-2008 audit process confirms that we are accomplishing our quality goals.”
As the first company to become certified, Able Translations Ltd. is a strong advocate of the standard and encourages other language providers to follow suit. “Having effective and proven processes in place ultimately reflects on the quality of the translation.” stated Teixeira. “As more providers strive for and achieve certification, the more competitive the Canadian language industry will be in the global market.”
