Industry Note: Standardization, Training and Professionalization of Community Interpreters  4/1/2010

In 2007, the publication of the National Standards Guide for Community Interpreting Services ‎‎(NSGCIS) was the beginning of a process that crossed Canadian boundaries to become an international movement. The NSGCIS is being considered in the United States, Asia and Europe, and it is also the starting point for the ongoing development of an international standard.

The NSGCIS provides a consistent framework for the provision of community interpreting services that includes interpreters’ qualifications, as well as specific responsibilities of clients, service providers and interpreters. It also incorporates standards of practice and ethical principles for interpreters. Organizations with a commitment to excellence and aware of the risks associated with the provision of community interpreting services in an unregulated environment welcome and embrace the NSGCIS.

Canada’s Language Industry Association (AILIA) supported the development of the NSGCIS and recently launched a certification program for its members. AILIA members interested in seeking certification under the NSGCIS are subject to compliance audits performed by Orion Assessment Services of Canada, an experienced auditing firm for ISO and language industry standards, such as Europe’s EN15038 and Canada’s CGSB 131.10-2008.
